An almost circular walk, taking in mostly open farmland and heathland and including two short, steep climbs. Some areas can be quite boggy. With care most walkers should have little difficulty with the terrain. There are several areas with good views and checking on the developing view is a good reason to take a rest on the climbs.
The central point of the walk, Butterton, is a small Staffordshire village with a tall spired church, a pub and at the lower part of the village, one of the widest forded roads I have encountered. Footpaths by the ford are raised, with footbridges to cross the two streams that feed the ford.
For those in need, further along the walk there are several facilities available at Wetton Mill, on the return part of the walk, with snacks, refreshments and toilets, or just a place to rest beside the Manifold (which often dries up in summer) and watch for fish or birds.
