On this walk you will use farmland and woodland paths, one quiet country lane, a busier B road (with good verges most of the way) and a fair stretch of the towpath beside the River Stort. You will also cross the busy A414 twice. With aircraft overhead approaching or leaving the nearby Stansted Airport, the A414 to one side and the river and railway to the other, as you walk along the towpath it is worth thinking back to the days before Harlow New Town was built. The towpath would then have been heavily used by horses towing the barges along the river. The ones you see today will usually be diesel powered and the trains are, of course electrically powered. The scene would have been very different in earlier times!

A very pleasant walk through countryside and along the beautiful River Stort. The Parndon Mill Lock boast a thriving set of artisan enterprises and is a good place for a picnic. Church Lane at start and end can be very busy and twice crossing the A414 takes courage and a lot of care.
