An interesting diverse walk through the area near to the coast in the east of County Durham. The route takes in three of the denes that the area is famous for, as well as a section of the Haswell To Hart Countryside Walk. There is also a good variety of easy to follow field-walking.

From Hutton Henry Village, field-walking takes the walker to Hesledon Dene, the first of the three denes visited on the walk. After a little road-walking followed by a nice panoramic section through fields the walk then arrives at Castle Eden Dene, the largest and most interesting dene in the North East. The walk through the dene is a great experience but particularly so during the spring, when the floor of the dene is carpeted with a variety of strong-smelling spring flowering plants. There then follows a contrasting terrain by way of a railway path. The final part of the walk back to Hutton Henry visits the last and smallest dene of Heads Hope Dene, with an easy section of field- and lane-walking to finish.

A good walk that we carried out on Sunday 17 Nov 2019. However because of the considerable amount of rain that has fallen over last few weeks recommend that this walk is more for a dry time rather than in late November, care was needed throughout the walk.
