The first section of this route is among the most demanding I have walked. With steep climbs and descents, though if not rushed they are walkable.
One section on the side of Bunster Hill has been diverted from the line shown on the map, though this does not add any distance or much more difficulty. The stile for the original route was fenced off with barbed wire and the access gateway chained and locked.
Using the 'Difficult Path' along Dove Dale on the opposite side of the river to main gravel track usually walked along this valley. This route is signed as Difficult Path, may be impassable after heavy rain, the description is quite accurate. In places the path is close the river's edge and soon becomes flooded, some sections are close to being washed away completely. There is the alternative of crossing the river at the footbridge near Ilam Rock and following the usual path on the other side if water levels are too high.
The pub used on this walk is The Watts Russell Arms in Hopedale. This is a walker friendly pub. They even provide a supply of boot covers to protect their carpets. They offer a limited menu, though portions are quite generous. There are also a couple of real ales on offer. The route of the walk passes The George in Alstonefield this pub offers a better choice of food.
