If you desire an easy and mainly level, riverside walk along good paths within a predominantly woodland environment, this circuit will suit you. The walk combines sections of three waymarked trails within the Forest of Ae and follows the Water of Ae for most of the way.

There are some alternatives to the full route and these are described in the text. There is a shorter alternative of five miles within the circuit and a hill loop within the route may be omitted altogether. Part of the outward section along the west bank of the Water of Ae is accessible to wheelchairs.

Practically anywhere en route is suitable for picnics and there are several tables and seats provided for this purpose.

Did this walk today. A plesant stroll mostly along the banks of the River Ae. Although part of the walk runs along the main drive, it was very quiet when we did it and thus were able to leave the dogs off the lead. Easy to follow directions from the author. Just two points though ... 1) There is no longer a blue banded post at the bridge mentioned in Step 1. There is only one path to take there though, as described by the author. 2) The 'er, erection' mentioned at Step 8 has disappeared leaving an empty field. Also worth mentioning that when you approach the forest from the A701 and pass through Ae Village, you will pass a Forestry Information Sign and board in the village. We thought about turning down there but followed the authors directions and sure enough, found the correct lane, a further 1/2m out of the village.
