Our walk starts from the Kielder Waterside Centre to follow woodland paths up to the Leaplish Crags, with lovely views down over Kielder Water. Tracks through the forest form the next section of the walk along with peace and tranquillity, with maybe the odd deer for company. Reaching Cranecleugh we find the 'Calvert Trust', a charity set up to give handicapped children activity holidays in the Kielder Forest complex.

Through their 'estate' and passing the little duckpond, we reach the road, crossing it to pick up the footpath that leads us back, along with more forest track to the Centre. Here we can enjoy the recreation facilities, a visit to the Birds of Prey Centre or restaurant, or maybe a dip in the swimming-pool to round off the day.

This walk has recently been much improved at points 8 & 9 by the construction of an excellent vehicular track by the Calvert Trust. At Point 8 after crossing the wooden bridge, you should now go straight on over the crossing path and up the red hardcore road to reach the forest road mentioned in Point 9. The old path up the hill over rough grass has almost disappeared and the grass is now so hummocky as to pose a definite risk of ankle turning, therefore should be avoided at all costs.
