Since we acquired a 12-year-old rescue Border Collie we have been searching around for walks that are under four miles, so he can walk with us, but still varied enough and interesting to make them worthwhile. The lovely countryside of Charnwood Forest is a great place for short, interesting walks. This is a walk through restored woodland in Charnwood Forest, taking in the volcanic remnants that form the heart of The Outwoods before traversing well-marked pathways to reach an ancient right of way that traversed this land when it was still a deer-park maintained for the landed gentry.

We loved this walk and I'm sure it will become one of our all-seasons favourites! It's gentle, varied, full of interest and very dog friendly, with no stiles and only a few yards on a road. As a bonus, it was also nettle-free today. The instructions were excellent, but at the hedge gap, point 7, follow the marker that now points down a short stretch of enclosed footpath rather than the field edge - it joins up further along. We extended the walk at 13 by following the middle path instead of the one on the left, in order to walk through more of the woods.

Mostly off lead walking except for a short length of road walking towards the end of the walk
