The walk starts in the lane from the church in Lower Shuckburgh and takes the bridleway parallel with the canal, then leaves it to walk through fields and reach Flecknoe. The views over rolling Northamptonshire landscape are far-reaching and green and the tiny village of Nethercote is briefly encountered on the way to the medieval site of Wolfampcote, on the edge of Braunston. On the return journey, the South Oxford Canal is taken, meandering and tranquil, wending its way round the contours of the land, unchanged since working-boat days but for the type of craft cruising the waterways now, carrying pleasure-seekers only on their unhurried little trips.
