Middlewich Big Lock - Trent & Mersey Canal and The Market Town - Big Lock

This is a short and sweet, interesting canal walk through the very attractive market town of Middlewich. It's a major canal junction and in mid-summer is a hive of boating activity with a lot of interesting things to see. It is also a very pleasant stroll at other times of the year but can be a bit bleak in winter. Having enjoyed this tow path walk take time to have a look round the very pleasant town centre - close to the canal by King's lock - before you depart. Most of the tow path is wide and firm with the only obstacle a snicket near the canal junction; however, there is a gate alongside which a radar padlock key may open. There are also a couple of short but steep slopes which will need wheelchair assistance, otherwise the route is quite level. Just after the start you will pass a children's play area. This walk includes instructions for walkers from moored canal boats.

The walk is suitable for children, senior citizens and anyone in-between. Excellent for dogs but a bit of a challenge for wheelchair users and buggies due to the two slopes. Suitable footwear will be anything flat soled and there should be no problems for anyone wearing shorts. On your route there are refreshment places, café and ice cream and other shops close by in the town. Although there are no picnic tables you will find several bench seats on your route. There are two pubs with food and toilets, and this walk starts from one of them. If you book in advance, you should be able to get a good meal with your pint; an excellent finish to a good walk.
