This route takes the walker on a tour to circumnavigate the old railway town of Shildon in south-west Durham. The terrain is a good mix of lanes and fields that are undulating in nature. Part of the route travels along the historic Brusselton Incline and also includes good views overlooking West Auckland and Bishop Auckland.

The walk starts from the picturesque village of Middridge and follows a straight lane to intersect and cross a railway line. A long section of lane- and field-walking to the south of Shildon takes the walker to the historic Brusselton Incline. From here further field- and lane-walking intersects the A6072, from where the route starts the long pull up through fields to the highest point of the walk to the north-west of Shildon, that presents great views looking down to West Auckland and Bishop Auckland. The route then descends through fields to cross over the northern end of Shildon railway tunnel before more field-walking and a short section of road-walking intersects the hamlet of Old Eldon. The final stage of the walk is entirely through fields for a return to Middridge.
