Here is a totally rural route within the Machars region of Wigtownshire. It provides a proper 'walk for all seasons', being entirely along minor roads and country lanes - not to everybody's taste maybe, but not to be discounted, as it also offers lovely views, moorland, parkland and coastal by turns.

From the suggested parking area outside the church in sleepy Mochrum, the route rises to give views across sheep pasture to Luce Bay. The little back road, shaded in parts by wayside trees, eventually reaches the tiny clachan of Loch Head. Here the route turns along a lane to arrive at another isolated little community, Elrig. Passing through its single street, one now takes a delightful, narrow switchback lane with idyllic views over the coast towards Port William. The banks here are filled with wildflowers, including orpine.

Please note that there are no refreshments available on this walk, but in Port William will be found the village store, a restaurant, a cafe and a licensed hotel.
