This walk is on the east side of the River Wye near Erwood. This stretch of the river is beautiful, with many rapids and rich in wildlife. Twyn-y-Garth is the site of a well-preserved hill-fort, but of particular interest is the German howitzer gun set in concrete on the summit. An information plaque on the gun gives its history. The views from the hill-fort are outstanding, but pick a clear day really to enjoy it.

Walked 1919 this morning. The bridge has been fenced off at point 14 barbed wire has been cut by previous walkers but still difficult. Do not attempt to walk points 15 to 16 as this is now dangerously overgrown. I can Recommend "Bridge Inn" at Llyswen for life saving Lager and food. The walk itself was magnificent.

The second half of this walk may have been difficult in spring but at the end of June, on a very hot day. it was a NIGHTMARE! I doubt anyone had walked it since Pat Roberts. The first part of the path down the river valley was difficult and mostly invisible but it got so much worse until we were trapped in jungle of bracken and nettles, over our heads, and passable only by bashing our way through with our sticks. Even this became impossible and we had a tall dense beech hedge on one side and a steep drop on the other. After period of claustrophobia and mild hysteria (unknown to us before) we found a weak bit of hedge and got through it, more nettles and over a barbed wire fence to freedom. 24 hours to recover from the nettle stings (we were wearing shorts and vests). Positive result - no sign of arthritis for nearly three weeks!
