Nerja Caves -El Pinarillo - Calaillo Gorge Circuit

The walk starts from the car park for the National Park. Don't be put off by the fact that the outward journey is up the driveable track to the El Pinarillo recreation area and picnic spot, because the easy walking gives you the opportunity to take in the magnificent mountain landscape of the Axarquia Sierras. Dally a while at the picnic spot of El Pinarillo and then take a short circuit into the mountains on the lower slopes of Cielo and to Fuente del Esparto, up to the viewpoint overlooking the Sierra de Enmedio. The return makes a detour into the Calaillo Gorge, a dramatic dry river canyon above the replica Maro aqueduct. You can round the day off with a visit to the Nerja Caves at the start of the walk.

Attempted this walk in February, 2014. First confusion was that walk does not start at car park for Nerja caves but to the left of their car park at the car park for the National Park. 2nd confusion was that although we intended to do the shorter version of the walk and turn left at boulder with arrow at point 3. We searched in vain for boulder so continued on upwards. This is a lovely peaceful (if steep) walk within the national park. On our descent we passed what we assumed must be the turn off point for point 3 - not a boulder but a very small cairn. We'll try this next time.

Our first walk in Andalucia and an introduction to the National Park above Nerja. We used this area several times following this walk. We enjoyed the river bed section except that we missed the exit point. We had to exit the gorge from the W bank when the trail stopped and ended up in the middle of the Mediterranean Autovia (not literally) Anyway the start point was easy to fine from there!
