From the imposing St Matthew's Church in Overseal, this pleasant little walk takes tracks, footpaths and woodland paths with a little road-walking, to visit Linton and the area of Botany Bay in attractive countryside. A regenerated area where much tree planting has taken place, this is part of the National Forest. The villages are interesting with neat, well-kept houses, mostly of red brick. The Ashby Canal runs nearby with a newly built section between Donisthorpe and Moira, eventually to extend further to link up with Snarestone.

There is one step stile at grid ref 271160 that requires your dog to be carried over. Otherwise the route is extremely dog friendly (one further step stile my be unsuitable for the very largest dogs as the gap is big enough perhaps for up to Labrador size). Otherwise, the route would have 5 dog stars. The offending step stile may be avoided by heading south from 272160 to rejoin the route east of Park Farm at grid ref 271152 but I haven't walked this so cannot confirm its suitability.

A pleasant sunny morning stroll in late Autumn. Mixed field lanes and woodland paths with occasional long distance views of the Midlands plain. Paths generally good. Quiet area except for walk through Overseal main street to join start and finish waypoints. Recommended for a summer evening's walk or half day if you are in the area.

22/08/11 - Don’t be deterred by the last comment – I too was apprehensive, but it turned out to be a wonderful walk. All paths were well maintained and free from nettles and weeds. You will be rewarded by walk through beautiful woods, farms, and fields full of birds, insects, wildlife, trees and plants. I recommend this walk. At point 6, (near the last telegraph pole) the hidden gap is now blocked by a new wooden fence. I walked a little further, but no proper exit so I just tracked back and climbed over the fence. There seems to be no footpath maintenance in this area and you are advised to not wear shorts or 3/4 length trousers. A pair of secateurs would also be useful. The route is particularly overgrown from point 2 with nettles and brambles. We missed the exit to the road at point 6. It was hidden in the undergrowth but we saw some trodden down grass where we could climb over a wooden fence. The wooden footbridge between 12 and 13 has a burnt stump across it. It is negotiable. The path after that along the fenceline is dreadful with lots of bramble and low hanging vegetation. Overall we found this quite a dull walk made worse by lots of brambles and nettles. William Taylor
