Penistone - Gunthwaite - Denby Dale

A 10km linear walk (one way by train) from Penistone, initially passing through Top o' th' Town before reaching Scout Dyke Reservoir, which was part of the supply system for Barnsley. The route continues to Gunthwaite and on to Upper Denby, wonderful views all the way, finally on to Denby Dale, a small, busy Pennine town. The route uses footpaths and bridleways, lanes, woods and open fields, with very little tarmac.

Penistone is a busy Pennine market town in the heart of an agricultural area. It was an important crossroad on the north - south and east - west ancient trading routes. It is close to the edge of the moors and is excellent walking country.
Penistone and Denby Dale have many interesting old stone buildings, well worth spending time to explore.

Gunthwaite Hall and Barn are outstanding examples of 16th Century architecture. They are still in full commercial use.
Top o' th' Town is at the southern end of the old West Yorkshire woollen district and has many examples of weavers' cottages and mill buildings.

Upper Denby is a small farming village and the surrounding countryside is superb. Denby Dale is famous as the home of the biggest meat and potato pie in the world. Unfortunately, this is cooked only on very special occasions, but the pie dish and the Pie Hall are still there.

Good pubs, eating and toilet facilities are found at Penistone.
There is a very pleasant picnic area at Scout Dyke.
Good pubs and eating facilities are also at Denby Dale.

This is a great walk at any time of the year, but it is in very open Pennine country, so make sure you are prepared for a cool wind.
