The Golden Valley is an area of rolling hills and peaceful farmland. It gets its name from the River Dore which runs through it. Local people confused the Welsh for water, 'dwr' with the French for gold, 'd'or', hence the Golden Valley. Walks 4603 and 4604 start from Ewyas Harold, while Walks 4602 and 4605 start from the 'capital' of the Golden Valley, Peterchurch. Walk 4601 starts from Dorstone. On this, the longer walk from Peterchurch, we travel out to climb up through farmland and enjoy wonderful views on the return, downward, route.
