This circular walk from Raby Village features several old and long footpaths through narrow belts of ancient woodland where squirrels are likely to be found. It's best enjoyed in the summer when there are leaves on the trees; also the few short sections that are muddy will be decidedly boggy in winter. Although advertised at 4.5 miles long, it includes an optional extra mile (with less pavement bashing and more rural footpath). There are occasional roads to walk along and in Thornton Hough you will find a very distinctive village store, (photo on the right).

Young children may become bored with this walk, and It's therefore more suitable for teenagers and adults. Good for dogs, but unfortunately not suitable for buggies or wheelchairs. Wearing shorts will be okay and suitable footwear will be anything flat soled in summer, but boots are recommended in winter. There are refreshments and toilets at the pub, also a bench seat at the start of the walk and another in Thornton Hough village not far from the end. The 17th century pub where you park is old and dark inside, but the 'Cowshed Restaurant' attached to it is more modern, being a converted oak beamed cattle barn. As it's not big, if you would like to enjoy a home cooked meal there, I would suggest you phone and book in advance of your walk. Tel. 0151 336 3416.
