The walk starts from Raglan in the centre of Monmouthshire, with a lively and dramatic past, which boasts one of the largest and grandest castles in Wales, a highly regarded pub, a 14th Century church and highly acclaimed music festival held every June. The castle was subjected to one of the longest sieges of the Civil War and eventually fell to Parliamentary forces and deliberately destroyed.

The walk passes the castle, well worth a visit, then continues across gently undulating fields, with views across to the Black Mountains and distinctive cone-shaped peak of Sugarloaf Mountain.
