The River Churnet has cut a deep gorge through the Staffordshire countryside and with the prominent Gothic style Alton Castle dominating the skyline it is often referred to as the Staffordshire Rhineland. Starting from the Ramblers Retreat tearoom and restaurant the walk goes along to Alton before going out of the valley to follow the Staffordshire Way south across open country. The return follows the river back along the track of the old North Staffs Railway (now a walkway) to the start. This is a walk for all seasons along this delightful valley.
