The walk starts at a car park for the fishing lodges. The first section leaves the car park and follows a major road before walking up to the highest point in a small hamlet. The walk continues along some rural lanes to reach a second major road, which is crossed before walking along a farm access road. From the access road you cross some fields to reach another farm access road. From this second road the walk continues along one side of the motorway before crossing and walking in the opposite direction alongside the motorway to reach Heaton Park. After entering the park the walk continues to the Hall and down to the major road you crossed at the start, which is crossed again to reach the River Irk. The final section is alongside the river back to the start. The majority of the walk is in countryside.

There are a number of food outlets in the park as well as toilets. Some of the paths are not shown on the map but are visible on the ground, especially the last few waymarks.
