River Tyne - South Shields - Souter Lighthouse - Seaburn - Sunderland - River Wear

The walk starts in the centre of South Shields and follows Ocean Road down to the seafront. You have the opportunity to visit the Tyne entrance and if the weather is right have a walk onto the south pier. There is a fine park down here with a big colony of swans and ducks.

You shall be walking south, following the clifftop footpath with fine natural rock sculptures to be seen. Many of these isolated columns rise from the sea and are a magnet for nesting seabirds. The gulls can be quite active, so it pays not to be too interested in them at nesting times.

On our journey along this route we observed seals, eider duck, shelduck, oystercatchers and gulls too numerous to list. The end of the walk will be on the river path alongside the River Wear and into the City of Sunderland.
