Rotherhithe had been a river crossing point and a centre of shipbuilding from the Middle Ages. In the Seventeenth Century it became the first place to have docks to serve London. Shipbuilding died after 1870 as the docks consumed more and more space. Ship-breaking, exemplified by Turner's 'Fighting Temeraire'(1883), continued until 1914, when the docks reached their greatest extent. The docks were largely destroyed in the first Blitz of World War II - but what remains can be seen on this walk.
