This walk was originally contributed by Michael Vingoe. Walkingworld is very grateful to Stephen Harris for taking over the upkeep, July 2021.

This unusual walk could last all day or a couple of hours, as it visits strange rocks, local woodlands, residential areas and a Georgian shopping arcade. The Commons are surprisingly wild, with impressive sandstone outcrops and you will be lucky to see more than two or three other walkers. On the other hand, the town is bustling with crowds of shoppers and tourists. No nettles or stiles, but sensible shoes are advisable for muddy or slippery patches in the country. The walk can easily be split into two, town or country, by walking along the road that joins Points 1 and 21.

Chose this walk for a very unsettled autumnal day. I was nervous when I saw the number of tightly packed waypoints on the map. I needn't have worried. Its a truly magnificent route. It weaves its way around the town taking in all the interesting, scenic and historic parts. We didn't use the map because the narrative description is word perfect, and so easy to follow. Enjoyed every step. Highly recommended for any weather.
