San Joan to San Vicent Circular - the route of Hans Walter Mende

This walk is dedicated to the memory of Dr Hans Walter Mende, a friend and walking companion who died whilst hiking in Ibiza in February 2012. It was one of his favourites. Beginning in the peaceful and picturesque little mountain town of San Joan, we start by hiking our way northwards though woodland, sadly severely damaged by the fire of early summer 2011 (see additional information).

After thirty minutes or so we reach the top near Puig de Macons by the lovely old hilltop farm, Can Jaume des Puig. Now we hike northwards, with magnificent views over the northern coastline of the island, before gradually descending and heading eastwards through timeless Ibiza countryside to reach the tiny hamlet of San Vicent. From here we shall head south and soon walk up a beautiful stream valley in an area happily unaffected by the fire.

Soon we begin a series of climbs up wide tracks that will eventually bring us to the mountain road linking San Joan and San Vicent. Crossing, we have only a few metres to walk to reach our outward track and now have a simple ramble back down to San Joan. The town has two very welcoming bar-restaurants where you can relax and enjoy a well-deserved drink.

Walk checked on 6 January 2019. I have changed the picture at way mark 10 and added a few descriptive remarks. No navigational changes. This remains a truly beautiful and varied hike. Very strongly recommended. Jim Arymar

Thanks for a great introduction to hiking in Ibiza. Very good instructions. Looking forward to more 'Jim' walks next time we are here. Who knew Ibiza had this to offer!
