From San Rafael the hike takes us through some stunning countryside which, in spring, is alive with vivid wildflower colours. Crossing the Canal de Frutera, which irrigates this fruit-growing area, we eventually reach the pretty, if somewhat trendy, little town of Santa Gertrudis. One of its several bar-restaurants would make an ideal lunch break before beginning our return journey. The second part of our hike takes us through more wooded country and we are again rewarded with lovely countryside and splendid views before reaching San Rafael once again and a well-earned refreshment! The hike is long and there are many twists and turns, hence the large number of waymarks.

Walked this one again 2 May 2018. There is one minor navigational change and some replacement photos as well as improvements (I hope!) to the step directions. We enjoyed a pleasant lunch in Santa Gertrudis before continuing. We had forgotten what a beautiful country ramble this is and so nice that it is very largely unchanged. Very highly recommended, especially in Spring. Jim Arymar.
