The walk starts in the small Cumbrian town of Sedbergh and makes rapid progress along a very quiet country lane, gaining height ready for the climb up to the edge of The Howgills. The main fells of the area are a backdrop to the ascent of Arant Haw. The return is on well-used tracks and a ridge via Winder, before dropping quickly back to the road and the starting point.
