Seven Springs - Trent and Mersey Canal - Shugborough - Cannock Chase - Seven Springs

Starting from Seven Springs, one of the many car parks surrounding Cannock Chase, this walk turns its back on the Chase, initially to join the Staffordshire Way and follow the more gentle contours of the Trent and Mersey canal as it skirts the villages of Little Haywood and Great Haywood. After a short distance the canal is left, to enter the grounds of Shugborough Park, a National Trust property containing Shugborough Hall.

Still following the Staffordshire Way we soon re-enter Cannock Chase and its lush mixed woodland, gently to ascend to the top of Coppice Hill before dropping down to Stepping Stones, a delightful spot in the Sherbrook Valley and back to Seven Springs.

10 years after initially walking, we found this walk to still be as pleasant as ever. The instructions are clear and concise, and with the live OS map on the WW app and our Alpinequest app you pretty much cant go wrong

Really enjoyable walk with varied scenery. Went with grandchildren and 2 dogs who greatly enjoyed a swim and paddle by the Essex Bridge. Directions were very clear and helpful.

We did this walk today with our dogs. Great dog walk. No styles. No cattle issues, well fenced, although some did come over and take an 'interest' in one of the dogs.

We're not dog owners - but I'd say this is a dog friendly walk (as we saw plenty). We got up early hoping to see deer rutting - no luck this year. But still a good walk. Didn't print the instructions - easy to follow with map and gps.

Like others, we really enjoyed this walk, even on a dull winter's day! We are moored in Great Haywood marina at the moment, so we started from WP3 before half ten, and lunched at Seven Springs just after twelve. Thanks for a great walk.

An easy excellent walk; the directions are spot on. However if you are worried about walking along the busy road from WP6, we had our grandchildren with us. You can take the first track on your right; it keeps parallel with the road and brings you out in the car park in a small quarry at grid reference SJ983208 opposite the punchbowl car park to pick up this route again. Highly recommend.

An excellent walk with excellent route descriptions which are necessary as the Chase is criss-crossed with lots of paths. Despite recent wet weather the paths were dry. Shame about the stretch along the road which really is very busy. Shugborough Hall is well worth a visit and would make the walk and a visit to the Hall an excellent day out.

My Wife and I did this walk today 30/09/06. First walk we have done off this site and it was excellent. Good clear instructions. Nice scenery along the way. 1hr 52mins. Ian Rowley

I did this walk today, 10/9/06 and found it to be terrific. The directions were spot on and the walking through the chase woodlands was second to none. Really good walk.
