After parking in church road, you make your way to a grade 2 listed monument, The Village Cross. Shortly after, you reach the WW1 and WW2 War memorial. Shillingstone had such a high proportion of residents volunteer for WW1 it earned it the title 'the bravest village in Britain'.

Closed in 1966, the old Shillingstone railway station, on the Dorset to Somerset line has been rebuilt and is now a feature of The North Dorset Trailway.

It's 2 miles to Okeford Fitzpaine, and after a short stretch of quiet country road, it's then onto open fields and farmland all of the way there. With a population of just over 900, Okeford Fitzpaine is definitely off the beaten track, and like stepping back in time.
A short stop for a picnic at the Church? Or a pub lunch at The Royal Oak, then back onto farmland back to Shillingstone.
