This walk will take you over some of the great open spaces of the Wiltshire Plains. From Shrewton you will walk westwards along the high ground to reach the outskirts of the locally called 'German Village'. Skirt around the north of the village, then turn south over Chitterne Down to the B390. After crossing the B390 you will continue in the same direction, still in open but hilly tank country before eventually turning east, to return to Shrewton over Maddington Down.

There are normally lots of birds and wildlife to see over this almost undisturbed part of the chalk downs. There is also the possibility that troops may be on exercise in the area at any time.

The so-called 'German village' is a purpose-built village, mainly in continental style but with a recent addition of a Middle East (Iraqi) section and presumably used to practise street fighting. It is not open to the public but the byways pass quite close.
