As this walk constitutes the seventh leg of the Cleveland Way, it is a linear walk. Return for day walkers is awkward, requiring a train and a bus, or the use of two cars.

However, the effort in planning the transport is well-rewarded. A gentle start to the walk soon gives way to a more strenuous climb through Guisborough Woods to Highcliff Nab, with superb views in all directions, including to the west and our next climb – Roseberry Topping. This is a steep climb and although it is optional, it's a rewarding peak to reach.

More moorland walking now leads us to Captain Cook's Monument, an enormous stone Cleopatra's needle that dominates the skyline for miles around. Now you can relax. There's no more climbing. The rest of the walk is a steady drop down through the woods to the sleepy little village (and station) of Kildale.

Dog-walkers, please note the possible presence of sheep along much of this walk.
