From South Middleton we follow unsurfaced roads to pass beneath Middleton Crags, then cross moorland tracks to Threestoneburn Wood, where another road is followed to The Dodd. Leaving the road we follow a lovely clear track across rough grazing moorland, over burns and on to a lonely cottage at Middleton Dean. From here we pick up another rough road that takes us back to South Middleton. All along the route many species of wildlife can be seen, along with the constant sound of the moorlands birds' chattering; a walk not to be rushed for optimum enjoyment.
