This is a walk of two halves. After a short climb, the first half of the walk will take you along the bleak and rocky terrain of Stanage Edge, offering ever-changing views over the Dark Peak. The walk then drops down over Stanage Moor and into the contrasting green fields and woodland of the valley north of Hathersage. It follows mainly paths and good tracks, with a small amount of road-walking along quiet roads. The paths can be muddy, so walking-boots are essential and gaiters are recommended.

The walk should offer no problems to the walker of average fitness.

Note for dog owners Parts of this walk are not on public footpaths, so please check restrictions before going in this area area at www.countrysideaccess.gov.uk. Select National Parks then Peak District to see the restricted areas. It is possible that dogs may not be allowed on parts of this walk.

According to the map it looks like the route is over moorland and not on a public right of way at the point where Malcolm describes and it is possible that restrictions to dogs are in place. To be sure check the Countryside Access website the day of your planned visit.

Warning to dog owners. c.1.5m into the walk, there is a new fence, a new stile and a notice saying "no dogs beyond this point"
