Considering this is an urban walk, only 10% is through built-up areas, giving it a very definite rural feel. The walk starts from the main car park in the pleasantly laid out Barnes Park. The route then passes through two more wide grassed areas before taking to the pavements for a section through a built-up area. The walk then enters a huge green open space that is the recreational area of Silksworth Sporting Complex where there are lakes, running tracks, football and hockey pitches, squash courts and an impressive dry ski slope. The next section of the walk is along the trackbed of a former railway that leads up to and onto the Tunstall Hills, from where there are outstanding views overlooking the coastal city of Sunderland as well as the surrounding inland areas. The final section of the walk involves a little pavement-walking through a built-up area before another short section of railway path-walking returns you to Barnes Park.
