The walk lends itself to an easy split in two. Swanage and Corfe are connected by a steam railway that runs a regular service at weekends, school holidays and throughout the summer. This could be particularly useful as Corfe has a wonderful castle, not to mention numerous pubs, hotels and tea shops. The first part of the walk from Durlston Country Park, via Swanage and the Ridge Path to Corfe, is about nine miles, or seven miles if you start from Swanage Steam Railway Station.

The castle at Durlston is currently (April 2004) undergoing a major renovation which is likely to last well past the summer 2004 season. The Globe, a large horological monument is still open however. The park visitors' centre serves tea etc in season and at weekends.

The views from the Purbeck Ridge are truly stunning to both sides. The final seven to eight miles along the coastal path are of constantly changing scenery. The route abounds with birds and wildlife; apart from Durlston Country Park with its famous dolphins and seabirds, there are birds and wildlife throughout the walk.

The coastal path is ever-changing with its old stone quarries and caves. The sea is clear and a favourite haunt of divers and the cliffs around Dancing Ledge and the lighthouse are frequented by rock-climbers.

I did this walk on 6/9/09 but a slightly reduced version - parked in Corfe and started the walk at point 17, followed the instructions to Swanage, approx 12 miles, and took the steam railway back to Corfe. A lovely day out.

Steph and Tracy completed this walk yesterday, and had a thoroughly enjoyable day. The instructions were really clear (we didn't get lost at all), but if the ground had been wetter it would have been really muddy in parts.
