Many walkers come to Arran for the mountains, which are comparable to any in the UK, both in quality and difficulty. Arran also has superb coastal walking and the Arran Coastal Way gives a circular walk round the island of almost 100 kms (62 miles) Different sections of the Way will be favoured over others, but most would agree that one of the finest sections is between North Sannox and Lochranza.

This walk starts at Lochranza, and follows the coast to the landmark of the Cock of Arran before continuing to Laggan Cottage. From here the walk gains altitude, leaving the coast behind to gain the moor. The total height gain of the whole walk is only 395 metres, making the route more attractive for those who don't wish to toil to the top of a mountain.

On the way you will occasionally come across signs of the hand of man in action. There are a couple of deserted cottages, and the remains of coal pits and saltpans. The overall feel, however, is one of unspoiled wildness. Sightings of wildlife will certainly enhance this, and be alert for sightings of seals, red deer, red squirrels and sea birds.

The close proximity of walk 4357, which starts at North Sannox, opens up more possibilities. Both walks pass by Laggan Cottage, and waymark 8 on walk 4357 is the same as waymark 5 in this route. One possibility would be to do the whole coastal section, another to traverse the high moorland section. Or just do both walks, and have two excellent varied days, walking the coast and moors of North Arran.
