Starting from Thornford, a small village four miles south-west of Sherborne, you're soon on the first bridleway of the day. A steep section through Ratcombe Wood follows where, at the top, there's a bench where you can catch your breath and take in the views.

Next through the tiny hamlet of Lillington with its church and 13th Century nave, then it's onto the grounds of Leweston independent day and boarding school, whose most notable alumni was BAFTA and Olivier award-winning actress Kristin Scott-Thomas ('Four Weddings and a Funeral'). On approaching the school, you will see a tower with a staircase corkscrewing around the outside, giving it a 'helter-skelter' appearance; this was once a water tower. Built in 1930, it was designed by the same architect who designed Wembley Stadium; the former tower is now a family home. On to Longburton where, en route, is a pub for 'light refreshment'! More bridleways, footpaths and quiet country roads in glorious countryside follow before reaching your start point.
