For those of you doing the Pennine Way in a series of day walks, you will no doubt be frustrated by the logistical difficulties involved in the Hawes - Thwaite section.
Following the winding up of the Tuesday bus service, the only option is to use two cars (please park considerately in Thwaite), get someone to drop you off in Thwaite, or take a taxi.
The advantage of walking this stretch of the Pennine Way in the north - south direction is not only the reduction in overall height gain (Thwaite is around 50m above Hawes), but also you have the views over Wensleydale in front of you as you descend from Great Shunner Fell. The views down into Swaledale are still very picturesque, but, in my opinion, Wensleydale beats it hands down.
Dog owners, please note that there are a couple of high ladder-stiles en route.
For those wishing to visit Hardraw Force, please note that a small fee is payable in the Green Dragon Inn.
