Ulcombe is a village eight miles from the county town of Maidstone and is located south east of Maidstone on the slopes of the Greensand Ridge and on the edge of the famous Weald of Kent. The walk begins in Ulcombe church car park.
The high elevation of much of the walk allows wonderful views of the Kent countryside. The countryside is varied and includes arable farmland, woodland and sheep pasture. There are also some lovely Kentish peg tiled houses to be seen along the way.
Boughton Malherbe church is a lovely setting for a picnic or coffee stop; there are benches placed to sit and admire the view. Beside the church entrance, there is a well-known TV actor's tombstone in readiness for his demise; he once lived in the old school house next door. The wild flowers are beautiful, particularly in springtime; first, primroses and many others, and then the bluebells.
Very close to WM4 (just a few hundred yards further along the lane) is The Pepper Box Inn, widely known for good food and local Shepherd Neame ales. Worth going back to, perhaps.
