The sheer size and emptiness of much of rural France can make it difficult to find circular family walks which allow you to discover the countryside away from roads. The Jura department has a network of forestry tracks, old railways and tramways and other old tracks which can be readily linked. Apart from a small number of popular tourist sites there are very few cafes, even in larger villages, so you will need to take your own refreshments. This walk uses part of the former railway from Lons-le Saunier to Champagnole (abandoned in the 1950s), forestry tracks and old roads. The description for finding the start looks complicated but is clear on the IGN map and a satnav should have no difficulty (though they can't always tell the difference between surfaced minor roads and unsurfaced tracks in rural France, the access described is all well-surfaced). The tunnel near the start is an unusual difficulty and a torch is strongly recommended!
