Wanlockhead - Southern Upland Way - Glengaber Hill - Stood Hill - Black Hill - Wanlockhead

'There's gold in them there hills!' Well, there used to be; lots of lead and zinc too, in the hills around Scotland's highest village. The last mines closed in the 1950s. This walk takes in some of the area's industrial archaeology on its way along Wanlock Water, following a section of the Southern Upland Way up and around Glengaber Hill, then returning to Wanlockhead by way of Stood, Green and Black Hills. Apart from the steady ascent onto Glengaber, there is no other significant climb involved and the route may be tackled by anybody of reasonable fitness. However, do take heed of weather conditions when walking in these hills; check the local forecasts before setting out (see additional information).
