The walk takes us to the 15th Century castle that dominates Warkworth, once home of the powerful Percy family, then across fields and down to the River Coquet where 'The Hermitage' is carved in rock; a small chapel cell, sleeping quarters and confessional that can be visited via a short boat ride across the river. The route back along the riverbank, The Mill Walk, also offers us the chance of hiring a rowing-boat for a jaunt on the water and spectacular views of the castle in various seasonal splendours.

Just returned from a fortnight staying in Warkworth and we used this walk on our first evening to orientate ourselves. A lovely evening stroll along the riverbank watching the ducklings and herons. Sadly, in our whole time in the area we never spotted a red squirrel or otter.

We've just spent several days staying in Warkworth on holiday and it is a lovely place. As we were staying in a cottage on the river bank, we did this walk in a slightly different order, but it was still really enjoyable. Do visit the castle and take the audio tour, which is excellent (and is included in the price of admission). I'd recommend a walk through the main town street as well as the Warkworth 'Beach Breeze' walk, which lets you explore another area of the town.
