This is a lovely walk for dawdling along and enjoying the scenery and wildlife. Ayton Castle is one of the first sights along the way. It is actually the ruins of a fortified house and must have been very grand in its day. There is much to see along the boardwalk as you go alongside the River Derwent in Forge Valley, named after a forge which has long since disappeared. The vegetation is lush and provides shelter for many birds and insects. Don't forget the repellent! In the birdwatchers' car park is a board listing the local birds – an amazing variety. The climb up through Raincliffe Woods is quite steep but not horrendous. The views are worth stopping for and the top is soon reached. Then the views down across the valley to the Wolds will be well worth the effort.
