Wetton - Beeston Tor - Throwley - Waterfall - Grindon - Thor's Cave - Wetton

This walk is quite demanding. Starting on high ground, the route crosses both the Manifold and Hamps Valleys with hill crossings between.

Much of this area is not frequently walked, though there are good paths which when walked were clear and well-marked and all stiles were present.

The crossing point of the River Manifold used on this walk crosses the mostly dry riverbed. There are stepping-stones when there is water in the river, but these are now off the popular line of the path and the riverbank is overgrown from the crossing point on the opposite bank. In early spring it is probably better to follow the alternative detailed road route to cross the river, rather than descend the bank to find the river crossing impassable and have to climb back to the road again.

The pub used on this route is The Red Lion in Waterfall. This a walker-friendly pub, now only opening at lunchtimes on Saturday and Sundays. They appreciate muddy boots being covered or removed. They offer a good-value menu with wide choice and generous portions. The choice of beers has improved since my previous walks to this pub and may now include a guest beer. Outside there are a few bench table on the raised area around the pub and to the side of the car park; these are intended for food bought from the pub, but they don`t seem to mind if you eat your own food outside, provided you have bought drinks.
