This walk provides a taste of a few of the different natural areas to be found in the north-east of England - sandy beaches, rugged coastline, wooded dene and open farmland - all in a relatively easy walk. Although the walk is the best part of ten miles in length, there are no noticeable gradients along its route, so it is not at all hard going.

The whole route is suitable for dogs, with all stiles encountered having 'dog gates' next to them. It is advisable to keep your dog on a lead between Waymarks 18 and 20 though, as this is open farmland.

The on-road section between Waymarks 17 and 18 should be treated with care, especially if taking young children, as it is a fairly narrow and fast country road with less than perfect visibility for motorists.

It is advisable to wear a decent pair of shoes, as some parts of Holywell Dene can get pretty claggy at times.

If the tide is in at Whitley Bay the first leg of the walk, to St Mary's Lighthouse, can be completed by walking along the promenade and then along the clifftop path, along the edge of the mini golf course.

There are several pubs along the way, all serving food during the day and a good range of decent ales (if that's your tipple).

Overall, please take a bit of time to have a look at what is around throughout the walk; the route takes you close to some very interesting places, which you'll only find by exploring.

At waymark 17 I would suggest you stay on the railway path to waymark 19 so as to avoid the road walk . It is a very busy road with no pavement or verge and is dangerous.Otherwise a very pleasant walk.
