This walk was originally contributed by Michael Vingoe. Walkingworld is very grateful to Stephen Harris for taking over the upkeep, July 2021.

This walk begins in Whyteleafe, which is served by two stations, Whyteleafe and Upper Warlingham, each within 400 metres of the start of the walk. A brief climb takes you above the suburban hubbub and onto the breezy open Downs, with views across London to the north and across the valley to the surrounding Surrey Hills to south and west. A lovely walk at any time of year, this walk is wonderful in Spring and Summer. Skylarks sing high above, while butterflies and grasshoppers inhabit the waist-high grasses, sensitively managed by the local councils and the City of London. Botanists will love the orchids and the locally common but nationally rare yellow-rattle amongst a host of downland plants.

Enjoyable walk! A bit muddy in early March, but no problem in good walking boots The pay and display car park only offered free parking for three hours (no paid options ) which should be comfortably enough to complete the walk. There’s a cafe in the recreation centre at the car park serving coffee snacks and light meals. A nice way to finish!

A nice easy walk with good views. However I suspect that the directions were posted some years ago as many of the fences and gates have changed, rendering the directions in places very confusing indeed. Some care is needed.

Walked 08.01.2017 Walk directions pretty much spot on. Although the weather was rainy, it was still a great walk and in places hard to believe this is Surrey. Really good walk, very easy and with a lot of variety. 9/10
