From Withington, a small but beautiful Cotswold village, the walk initially stays close to the River Coln and then heads through woodland to the Roman villa at Chedworth, one of the most extensive and complete in England. It has almost a mile of intact walls, some excellent mosaics and an original latrine in quite good working order! The Roman villa is now owned by the National Trust and if you wish to visit the site as part of the walk, there is an entry charge.

The walk continues from here, climbing through further woodland and emerging into open fields, where there are excellent views to Chedworth Village. The return journey takes you across a disused airfield and back through yet more woodland. The end of the walk passes close to the site of another Roman villa, although there is no apparent evidence of this.

22nd June 2016 was definitely the wrong weather for this walk. It started well with a large car park at The Mill and a walk through the woods. No rain but the waist high grass was dripping with mizzle. Wadding through it was hard work and wetting! The paths through the wood were soggy, slippy, muddy and at times treacherous. I took a short cut from 12 to 17.The last part was the best. I can see the potential for a drier day so 4 stars. It is a pity that field edge paths are not mown.

A Beautiful walk in a beautiful part of the Country. Directions are pretty good but couple of points to note.. At Point 8 (don't follow the obvious path towards the farm) At Points 23/24 (through Withington Woods)the correct paths to take here are not as obvious as its made out. Take extra care at this bit as it's easy to take the wrong route and come out on the wrong side of the Wood!

We did this walk on a very blustery day, and it was great. The route was really clear to follow, the views superb. We didn't visit the Roman Villa, but feel inspired to go back another day to visit it. Also, the Mill Inn at the end of the walk was another plus. Great, varied walk, well worth doing.
