This walk, starting on Wyke Down, part of the vast Cranborne Chase Estate, will take you through woods, on country roads, Roman roads, footpaths, bridleways of dirt (mud!), grass, gravel and tarmac, with the wildlife of deer, pheasant, buzzards and kestrels to be seen and also the mysterious headstone of John Ironmonger! It passes through the villages of Gussage All Saints and Gussage St Michael onto Sovell Down, then it's back to Wyke Down. There are six stiles.

Route updated with detour, if needed, at way point 9. No tree problems and it's a pretty easy 8 miles! :-)

Thanks for the comments Geoffrey. We left the overgrown bit, between 9 and 10, in as it's only 100yds in length and, as I said, passable when we did it. We'll check it out, as a detour could've been had before getting to the road. Can't do much about fallen trees on point 8 I'm afraid ;-) The walk is listed as 7.7miles, 550yds difference is pretty good. The duration is set by Walkingworld, we're medium speed walkers and it took us 3hrs 25mins

I did walk 7280 today. Two things ; first, the Directions say, at 9 "it was a bit overgrown when we did this" . Its a lot overgrown now ! In fact impassable between 8 and 10, partly due to a fallen tree - not a big tree, but maybe 6 inch dia trunk. I managed to crawl underneath it, but still had to turn back. I ended up back tracking and walking around the edge of a field to reach waypoint 10. The alternative ( not good) is to stay on the road at 9 , walk northwest up to Grid ST98013, then turn East and walk back into Gussage St.Michael to reach waypoint 12. The other thing is that my satnav (SatMapAction 12) made the whole route 8.02 miles. It felt like that, I am a fast walker , and it took me 3 hrs 15 mins.
