Explore Durham's largest ancient monument site, pitted with the remains of Roman and pre-Roman settlements and later mineworkings. In 1868 the fell became a regulated common, giving locals the right to graze on payment of yearly rent, a practice that continues to this day. There are many pigeon lofts on the fell.

You return on the route of the disused railway, a branch of the Stockton and Darlington line. On the way you go past the impressive remains of Lands Viaduct.
