Grasmere must be the prettiest of all the Cumbrian lakes and the best view can be had from Loughrigg Fell. Though the ascent to Loughrigg from Ambleside is steep and the descent even steeper, you can reward yourself with a restful end to your walk along the wooded lakeside path and a cream tea in Grasmere Village.
In good weather, you'll find plenty of places on top of Loughrigg to picnic. Alternatively, Rothay Park at the start is ideal.
Dog-walkers, please note that sheep may be present on Loughrigg Fell and there are a couple of cattle grids to cross.
