Starting off in the tiny hamlet of Hartsop, this great walk begins by following a short section of minor road before turning north and following a well-defined footpath along the bottom of the valley. A small waterfall is passed (up to the right) and then the ascent starts. The path up is hard going but a majority of the ascent is completed in one go. The path ascends steeply to Boredale Hause with spectacular views down to Patterdale and the southernmost end of Ullswater.

Upon reaching Boredale Hause the route is much more gentle. It follows a path skirting the top of a stream and offers breathtaking views down to Hartsop and Brothers Water as well as over towards Helvellyn. It's just a short way to the first peak of the day: Angletarn Pikes. The 360° view from this peak is outstanding and its twin peak just a few hundred metres away is worth a detour, as the view to Angle Tarn is breathtaking.

The next part of the route follows a section of Wainwright's Coast to Coast as it passes Angle Tarn and then takes a detour path to the second peak of the day, Brock Crags. This peak offers different views from the last summit, with Hartsop Dodd, Red Screes and Gray Crag seen very well. Heading down from here takes you to the second lake of the day, which has changed as of late. Hayeswater is a large mountain tarn which once had a dam at its outflow (removed in 2015) and its water level has dropped several metres, making it more natural. The last section of descent follows the main path along Hayeswater Gill back to Hartsop.
